After completion, each of the three blocks was given to a different milliner to test. As of
Kim Fraser proprietor of and creative talent behind of Hatnip Hats was given the first block. The original hat, from which the block was created, was initially part of her collection and she was generous enough to allow me to use it for my experiments.
Kim used parasisal straw with grosgrain ribbon and a wired brim.
As a proof of concept, I also blocked a test hat from a reclaimed hat body.
Overall I am very happy with the results of the Kim Hat Block project. It served as proof of concept that 3D scanning combined with model manipulation and computerized cutting machines are effective tools in the realm of Millinery. In addition to allowing others to wear this adorable hat, this replication process ensures that the means of making this hat and the hat itself are preserved in a digital form. I enjoyed the project immensely and can’t wait to explore all of the exciting possibilities it opens up!
